I think that this survey is worthwhile. It took me a while to think up all
the languages I have programmed in over the years. They missed three -
plain old SQL (which I consider a language, even though it is usually
combined with another except for simple things like report writing, SAS
(which was a language - at least as much as R is a language), and APL. And
something called easytrieve which was a form of RPG without the strict
columnar restrictions. I was surprised they missed APL but maybe they are
too busy re-inventing it.

There are still places to get copies of APL for free. I strongly suggest
that any students of computer languages get a copy of APL and try to write
some simple programs in it. (Especially now that you no longer need to
purchase a special typeball for your selectric based terminal to generate
the special symbols. The language uses strict right to left evaluation
(parenthesis tale precedence) and has an operator for almost anything you
would want to do. If you have to code a loop (other than to interface with
a human, you have probably failed. This talk group would be a fine place to
discuss it. And many interesting programs can be expressed in a single
line.

Anyway, about the Perl survey, Here is their canned message:
Take part in the 2007 Perl Survey!

The Perl Survey is an attempt to capture a picture of the Perl community
in all its diversity. No matter what sort of Perl programmer you are,
we'd love to hear from you.

The survey can be found at: http://perlsurvey.org/

It only takes about 5 minutes to complete.

The survey will be open until September 30th, 2007. After that, we'll be
reporting on the results and making the data freely available.

Please feel free to forward this email to any other Perl programmers
you know.

Thanks for your help!

Yours,

Kirrily "Skud" Robert
