Why not just go with a projector? Nearly unlimited size without the
space hogging foot print and all for about the same money.
Oh, since my point earlier about "screencasting" was missed... My
point was simple and plain: the very idea of creating a "screencast"
for theatres is ludicrous. The pixellation would be horrendous.
Consider this... On a 32 inch 16x9 screen, 1920x1080 is roughly equal
to each dot being 1 "point" in size. (There are 72pts to the inch if
you remember from your weights and measures unit in high school
algebra.) That's a single dot 1/72nd of an inch wide and tall. Now,
extrapolate that into the 32-foot theatre screen of the same 16x9
proportions and we have a dot that is nearly 1/4 inch in size.
However, in order to get reasonable frame rates to record for our
"screencast", we have to go to a lower (much lower) resolution which
leaves us with a dot somewhere around 1 inch in size. ONE INCH!!! Can
you imagine trying to watch something on-screen that looks like it was
made from a child's building blocks??
Secondly, 1920x1080p24 isn't a video standard at all. HDTV uses
1920x1080p30 because the 30fps (technically, 29.97fps) syncs up quite
well with the 60Hz AC line frequency we use here in the US. 24fps is
for modern films shot with actual film loaded cameras. Currently,
most, if not all, movie studios have switched to 30fps digital cameras.
These cameras allow easier editing of the "film" in post-production
simply due to the nature of digital cinematography in and of itself.
Third, Pixar Entertainment(tm) uses a vast render farm to render each
individual at a higher pixel density than the 1920x1080 screen
resolution you propose. The rendered images are then projected onto
the celluloid film. Whatever method they use, I'm not sure but it
certainly preserves the ultra high resolutions they created in the
render farm.
