[Talk] Help with a defunct HP monitor

Hi Guys,

Maybe someone can advise.

I have an HP pavilion f1703 flat screen monitor, which was not in use
for about 5 months due to a move, and when I connected it again, I
noticed a problem - it turned itself off occasionally. Eventually it
became worse and worse, and now it turns off after a few seconds.

My wife researched the situation, and found out there was a recall of
these monitors, because of a manufacturing problem. But when I
contacted HP (getting through their fucked up customer service
structure is a story from hell, but can be done after several days),
they told me that they are sorry, but the recall period is over, and I
am SOL. They offered me to purchase another monitor at a discount, but
I could - and did - do better with a Benq monitor.

My opinion is that a manufacturing defect should not be subject to a
time limit, and that HP should stand behind its products and repair
them if the problem is not usual wear and tear. It is not my fault I
have not been connected for a while and missed their announcement.
They never sent me any alerts, and I don't visit their site.

Is there any legal or other recourse to the situation that you would
recommend? A consumer watchdog, regulatory agency, etc. - anything
short of suing them directly.

Thanks,

Z.
