it really depends on what the spirit of the assignment is. and that is
on the instructor. either way, he is a <bad name> who didn't make it
clear. good training for all the other <bnames> that one comes across in
life. the key is that you have to please the instructor so it is up to
the student to decipher what the true "spirit" of the assignment actually is
