Why in honor of the anniversary of a sad and upsetting event? What's the
goal sought to be achieved by whipping up patriotic "love of country" and
tying that in with a memory that is both saddening and angering -- to what
end? This wouldn't be a celebratory or happy rah rah sort of thing, would
it be.
What's the goal is a question that's worth asking before one just goes
along with stuff.
When the masses get whipped up in directionless emotions that are tied in
with anger, they can be dangerous -- to themselves and others. They not
infrequently put down their thinking caps, so to speak, and go along in
the direction of someone else's agenda, usually the someone who stirred
them up with the sloganism and symbolism -- like declarations of war,
willingness to let politicians get away with misguided laws, following a
leader, and so forth.
Not the same as just a hootin' hollerin' good time. Not the same as a
campaign with a stated purpose (like a celebration for Earth Day, or
wearing a ribbon to encourage donation to some kind of medical research.)
So I'd like to know to what end, what point.
