There are floating Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong. They are tourist
traps, the food is better in those alley restaurants where the waiters
are independent contractors who negotiate with the vendors for you and
then bring the food over - and a heck of a lot cheaper. What you pay
for in the boats is the atmosphere - those boats have been in a ton of
movies - I think they were even in the animated version of Street
Fighter II.

It has been a while since I've seen Blade Runner - while I thought it
was good SF, I did not think it was a seminal movie of the genre, as
many do. But I vaguely recall the floating restaurants and I thought
that it was representaitonal of a hong kong floating restaurant, while
trying not to position the movie in Hong Kong.
