With as many stories as I've read in my life, I don't recall this one... I'm
sure who ever is posting it over on the other SCI-FI list will most likely
get you an answer.

Kwan - If you really like Sci-fi, check out Asimov's Science Fiction. I've
got a subscription (I think good till 2009) and the stories range from bland
(a few, very rare but some are a bust) to good (many are like this) to
OMGTISFC [OMG - That is so F cool] (usually one per book which is per
month). Example of the OMGTISFC was about a vest that moved between Parallel
Cosmos [Same universe, different version of the time line]. Imagine if you
did move to another Cosmos where 1) Gates was a waiter and 2) the rubic's
cube had not been invented. You could stay there and invent something better
than windows and the rubics cube [make plenty of money]. The kick was, once
you went to the next cosmo, you can't come back.

Oh, asimov's URL is www.asimovs.com . They also have "Analog" which is also
suppose to be sci-fi at www.analogsf.com .

BTW, the stargate that did something similar to what your asking, I don't
recall which one episode did that. And did even sounds like how ST-TNG did
an episode where they could not use warp drive because it was tearing up the
fabric of space [super far fetched - ugh].
