Try turning off any graphical boot splash screens and any type of
framebuffer consoles. You may also need to do something specific in the
shutdown scripts such as unloading the video drivers.
I've noticed that even on a VMWare virual system that the video memory is
not cleared even after a reset of the virtual. I had a problem with some
program and rebooted my vmware virtual system. System rebooted, but in the
first few moments as it moved to rc5 the image of my previous desktop (right
before the reboot) appeared before the gdm login.
