Press and hold the Option key to invoke the 'Startup Manager' and then
select the appropriate startup disk. Alternately, you can force an OS X
boot by pressing x immediately after the system starts. Even better,
convince your wife to use Ubuntu ... :)
using Ubuntu 8.04 on my MacBook. I hope you can bail me out before my
wife notices what I have done...
So - I wanted to see if Ubu 8.04 would work on my (first generation,
Intel 32) MacBook. I looked for the boot options menu, and indeed, you
can switch to booting off an external drive. I did just that, Ubuntu
booted, mostly worked, except that I did not find an ADSL connection
option in my manager, so I could not exit the confines of the local
host. But I digress.

I ejected the disk and rebooted, only to find out that, unlike on my
Dell and all other computers, I don't get a splash screen that lets me
change the boot order back to the HD. So now all I get is a message
asking me to insert a valid boot disk in my CDROM player.

Could someone tell me what key combination would force a HD reboot on
OSX (I can find plenty of codes to NOT do that), or expose the boot
manager, or expose the BIOS so I can switch back to my HD? I don't have
the OSX CDs, since I have not encountered a design flaw in the MacBook
so far, and did not expect it to be so user-error-susceptible.

Thanks,
Z, banned from the Macbook and the 1998 Dell which still works just
fine, thank you very much.
