I recently purchased a Linksys WRT54GL router, with the hope of installing
OpenWRT or another router software and getting better performance from my
home network. Specifically, I would like to set it up so my web server gets
top priority for outgoing traffic, and my wife's browser gets top priority
for downloads, so that server performance and wifey's user experience are
optimized, while we still maintain the ability to upload and download in the
background (I would like to provide ftp access to my server, and I download
a lot of software, primarily linux distros.
Right now I am using a similar router (WRT54G) which is not linux
compatible, and using the measly firmware that came with it. When I am
downloading stuff, which I never do at more than 75% of available download
speed and 50% upload speed, people tell me my server times out, and my wife
can't use Skype or listen to streaming audio (let alone video).
So my questions are:
1. Is OpenWRT the best software to use, or is there something else/better
for that purpose?
2. How likely am I to obliterate my router by misconfiguring or using
OpenWRT, either permanently or temporarily?
3. If/when I install OpenWRT, would it be ready to go as a router (without
throttling or anything advanced), or would it have to be configured
correctly before I can access the net from my home?
Any advice from people with exprience would be appreciated.
Z.
