You can test SMTP by manually sending an email:

telnet mail.hostname.com 25

HELO your.hostname.com
MAIL FROM:<sender@sendingdomain.com>
RCPT TO:<recipient@recipientdomain.com>
DATA
Subject: I am testing email

This is an email.

Yes, the postfix box is on the Comcast network.

How can I try and do this manually.  I know I need to telnet to port 25,
but what do I do after that?

Just a stupid question, but is the Postfix box on the Comcast network?
I only ask because I know Bellsouth doesn't allow me to relay from any
other mail server except theirs.  Can you do it manually? Meaning telnet
or NC into the the SMTP server and send an email?
