[Linux] Installing from .tgz

I think it's mostly preference and what works for you.
I untar in my home dir /home/mdb/downloads and then compile there
also making sure that PREFEX points to /usr/local. Make install
would copy the binarys there.
I've seen some create a /usr/local/src in which the tar file would
be untar-ed and compiled there.
I think it's what works for you. I wouldn't use /tmp though as this
is usually swap space and you could (depending on how big this partition
is) fill it up. My swap partition is usually Total Memory times 2 so
if I had 256MB then my swap partition would be 512MB.
