It look like if you REALLY want to watch Yahoo news
videos, you can build the plugin from source:

http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/mplayerplug-in-daily.tar.gz

I see the file Source/plugin-setup.cpp now contains
the string: "application/x-ms-wmp"

Conclusion: To get things working in Linux, ancient
software is not an option.
