[Linux] problems with modem

Hello guy's O.K. hear is my thing, i I just get a 3com/usr PCI 3cp5610a modem for my linux box, my problem is with the recognize process. Im using a intel 810 motherbord or a "Gateway E-1400" i have been having problems with this motherbord with the instalation of linux, but after all was o.k. now the modem is recognize but the system don't know in wich port is install it.

Well after a make the configuration for the internet, i start to check
port by port with kppp, but nothing!, well I give-up and try with other box, now a Compaq P. 5070, but i find out than i have the same problem.

I`m not familiar with hardware under linux, so that's I'm asking for your help, any tip will be great....
