You might want to look at www.NeoLinux.org, some tweaking to the startup
scripts is needed to run off a regular hard drive but it's got
everything you need.

Also trimming down a regular distribution is not all that hard.

You got two roads, start small and add or start big and subtract, either
way can get you there it all depends on how well you know Linux.
