HOTWORDS: Sun Solaris, RedHat Linux, SAN Fibre, ISCSI based HW/SW, Fibre Switches, NFS, NT, DNS, ability to write scripts, Veritas, RSC, ALOM, OBP, and hot swapping devices on the servers.
Works under the general supervision of the Enterprise Systems / Storage Manager,
Manages the administration of the Solaris Unix servers in the development, production,
and DR environments.
Works with ESS manager in the design and administration on the Unix / Linux farms.
This includes the following Unix / Linux server installation and setup, Unix / Linux
Security, and Unix / Linux Patch management.
Comfortable with most aspects of the Sun Solaris / Red Hat Linux operating system
administration including the following:
Has a solid understanding of Advanced systems setup including Solaris Jumpstart and
Red Hat kickstart so systems are patched and secure out of the box.
Has a solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; understands paging and
swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, filesystem
Software concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions).
Has a solid foundation in dealing with SUN Hardware including the following: RSC,
ALOM, OBP, and hot swapping devices on the servers.
Has a solid foundation with HP Hardware running Red Hat Linux. Must be able to install,
diagnosis, and resolve issues on Red Hat Linux on HP Hardware.
Has a solid foundation on SAN Fibre and ISCSI based hardware and software for both
Solaris and Red Hat Linux. Understand basic SAN hardware such as Fibre switches,
cables, connectors and cards, can do necessary zoning on'SUN hardware.
Has a good foundation on system logging / monitoring concepts and implementation.
Has a good foundation on system performance tuning and capacity planning on Sofaris
and Linux
Has a solid foundation on software volume managers including Veritas Volume Manager,
Solstice Disk Suite / Volume Manager and good hardware / software raid concepts.
Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environment concepts; can
configure NFS, NT domains; can use nslookup or dig to check information in the DNS;
understands basic routing concepts.
Can manage and setup a DNS and sendmail environment.
Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (Bourne shell, Korn Shell or Perl).
Three to five years of system administration experience.
Administers a complex site alone or assists in the administration of a larger site.
Initiates some new responsibilities and helps to plan for the future of the site/network.
Act as a backup to the Storage / Backup administrators
Evaluates and/or recommends purchases Unix / Linux; has influence on purchasing
process.
Must be comfortable in working in Windows environment including managing applications
on a Windows server.
Work on special project assigned by the Enterprise Systems / Storage Manager.
Must have independent problem-solving skills, and be self-directed. In addition the
person must be able to work in team and foster a team environment.
Must be able to document the Unix / Linux Farm including inventory and procedures.
Can manage novice system administrators or operators.
Must possess knowledge of both Solaris and Red Hat Operating systems including the
following:
