LOCATION: FIU campus at Tamiami Trail and the Turnpike (map will be posted on the web site soon) Here's a brief description of the talk: We intend to cover gnuplot and MuPad. As time permits we can cover Octave and some of the mathematics libraries for the computer science students. As for statistics, I know a little R and can probably answer a few general questions about its uses. The demo of gnuplot may interest any science/math students because it demonstrates data graphing. For the admin types, there is a short section on system monitoring. If there is sufficient clammoring for it, we can also cover elliptic curves in quadratic twist families and demonstrate its relation to L-series forms... :) MARK YOUR CALENDAR -- SEE YOU AT FIU ON MONDAY EVENING !!! FLUX has been given a fantastic opportunity to spread the word about Linux, and to bring some new faces into our group. The people who run the ITEC trade show have contacted us and offered a free booth at their show! The event will be held November 8th and 9th at the Broward County Convention Center. Other exhibitors include Intel, 3Com, Hewlett-Packard and many other technology companies. For more information, see http://www.goitec.com and select Fort Lauderdale from the Event drop-down menu. This will be a great opportunity for us to introduce Linux to people who are likely to be interested in it. Attendance is by invitation-only, so we will be able to talk to hundreds of computer-literate folks! In addition, ITEC has contacts at Red Hat, and will be getting prizes for us to give away at the event. This will be the second ITEC show with a Linux presence. The first was a few months ago in Jacksonville, and it was successful enough that ITEC wants to continue hosting local Linux user groups at their events. Interestingly, the Jacksonville Linux user group got some good press in the local newspaper. Using the ITEC link above, go to the Fort Lauderdale page and click on the link for the Jacksonville Times-Union coverage of that show. For our part, we need to supply volunteers and machines for the show. This might be a bit tricky since the show takes place during two weekdays, but I am confident that lots of FLUX members will rise to the challenge! There is also an opportunity here for local Linux-related businesses. If enough Linux-related businesses purchase booths at the show, ITEC will create "Linux Lane", a corner of the show right at the front of the hall, on the left as you stand in the entrance. It's kind of funny, but the exact opposite corner (back right of the hall) is set aside for Microsoft :) Since many Linux-related businesses take their clients from the local area, this will be an excellent opportunity for training companies, computer and network services companies, application developers, etc. If you would like more information about having your own booth in Linux Lane, send me e-mail and I will put you in touch with my contact at ITEC. If you would like to volunteer to be in the FLUX booth for part of a day, please e-mail me as well. We try to participate in about two Linux advocacy/recruiting events per year, and this one looks like it will be a great fit for us. As Linux becomes more widely recognized in the global business community, FLUX can reach out to our local business community! Talk to your boss now about finding some time off on November 8th or 9th! Or, if you _are_ the boss, e-mail me about a booth at ITEC! --Adam :-) -- Adam Glass | Metro Link, Inc. | FLUX-Florida Linux User Xchange adam@metrolink.com | http://www.metrolink.com | http://www.flux.org From adam@metrolink.com Fri Sep 8 18:31:42 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: flux-announce@flux.org Received: from server1.metrolink.com (server1.metrolink.com [216.242.72.34]) by mail.flux.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CBA7211EC7 for ; Fri, 8 Sep 2000 18:31:41 -0400 (EDT) Received: from metrolink.com (IDENT:adam@babcom.metrolink.com [216.242.92.68]) by server1.metrolink.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id SAA07805 for ; Fri, 8 Sep 2000 18:31:41 -0400 Message-ID: <39B968E6.A69F9A07@metrolink.com> Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2000 18:32:06 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: flux-announce@flux.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: flux-announce-admin@mail.flux.org Subject: [Flux-announce] FLUX BROWARD SEPTEMBER MEETING Sender: flux-announce-admin@mail.flux.org Errors-To: flux-announce-admin@mail.flux.org X-BeenThere: flux-announce@mail.flux.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0beta2 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: flux-announce@mail.flux.org List-Id: FLUX Announcements (meetings, events, etc.) THE GOOD NEWS: There WILL be a FLUX meeting in Broward on Thursday 9/14. For those who are new to the list, it's a large show for IS/IT professionals held at the Broward County Convention Center. ITEC is giving us a large booth for free. We need three things -- PEOPLE, MACHINES, AND MORE PEOPLE! PEOPLE! ======= The show is held November 8 and 9, which is a Wednesday and Thursday. It runs 10am to 4pm each day, so you'll need to beg the boss for some time off :) We need your help! To do this right, there should be at least three FLUX people in the booth at all times, and preferably four. Ideally we will have enough volunteers to do half-day shifts of 3-4 hours each. That works out to 12-16 people needed. So far, we have the following volunteers: Al White Michael Marschall Leo (alltech) Stephen Watts Alberto Fernandez That means we need a lot more volunteers! MACHINES! ========= In addition we need people to volunteer their Linux machines for the whole two-day period! ITEC has very generously given us a BIG booth, 20x20 feet. In order to fill it and make it look interesting to visitors, we should have lots of machines there. If you volunteer your machine, you don't necessarily have to bring it to the convention center. We will try to set up a more central location the night before the show for that, and also return them from a central location. We will label and inventory each machine to make sure nothing goes missing. Of course, you can watch over your machine better if you volunteer ... :) AND MORE PEOPLE! ================ The show runs 10-4 each day, but there will be a setup period on Wednesday before 10, and a teardown period on Thursday after 4. We need volunteers to help with these as well! If you want to volunteer for this AND a shift in the booth, we can make sure to schedule that. PLEASE VOLUNTEER! This is part of being a Linux community ... pitching in and doing our part to spread the word. The idea is to collect e-mail addresses of prospective FLUX members, then contact them in advance of the next FLUX meeting. We will not use the addresses for any other purpose. The next question is, of course, how should we do this? Paper forms are not a good method because it would take too much time to type in names from a list. The better way is to collect the addresses with a program running at the booth, then generate a mailing list. However, a fair amount of time poking through the web didn't turn up anything that really fits the bill. And so we come to the challenge: The First FLUX Programming Contest! The rules are simple. Write a program which conforms to a basic design document which will be posted to this list Real Soon Now. It must be open source and conform to some reasonable license, and should be able to run on a standard Linux distribution with little or no configuration. It must be ready fairly soon, well before the ITEC trade show on November 8th. I'm afraid there is no prize, save the admiration of your peers. You can submit the program to Freshmeat and we can also offer it to other Linux user groups and nonprofit organizations for free. You can work alone or in a group. In the event that more than one program is finished before the deadline, a panel of distinguished authorities will judge which one will be used by FLUX. Judging will be by conformance to the spec, usability and appearance. Obviously performance is not a major concern here (sorry, all you assembly programmers!). The spec should be available in the next couple of days. Note that you can write two separate programs, one to collect data and another to generate a mailing list and send out a message. I'm sure there are lots of questions now, but please hold them until the spec is available. That should happen Real Soon Now. Start thinking about it now ... Who will win the First FLUX Programming Contest?! If you want to reply publicly, please post to linux@flux.org ... replies sent to the announce address are not posted. As mentioned previously, we are going to have a programming contest. Here is a brief spec/requirements document. You may work alone or in a group. In the event that more than one program is written by the deadline, a panel of distinguished experts will choose the winner. The judging will be done based upon conformance to this document, ease of use, and appearance (for the data collection part). The author(s) of the program retain copyright and agree to release the code as open source, conforming to some reasonably open-source license such as NPL (Netscape Public License). Yeah, I know that's vague. I trust you to Do The Right Thing :) So, here we go... GOAL: The goal of this project is to collect e-mail addresses typed by a user, place them into a plain-text file, then use the file to send an e-mail message to each address in the file. The list of addresses should be in the blind carbon copy field so that recipients of the message do not see the full list of addresses. The data entry portion should be simple and user friendly, so a visitor to a trade show booth can type his/her address and click a "Notify Me About The Next Meeting!" button. A feature to correct the most recent entry to the list is desirable, but not necessary. Checking for a valid e-mail address is VERY desirable, along with a chance to re-type those which are not valid. If these features are not possible, the e-mail-sending routines should check for invalid addresses instead. The e-mail sending portion should allow the user to specify a filename which contains the message body, as well as relevant e-mail header entries (From address, full name, reply-to name and address, TO address). The project may be split into two components or programs. One can accept data from users while the other sends the e-mail. It should be possible to concatenate several text files of e-mail addresses together. This will allow two or more computers to collect data, then one computer to send a message to all addresses with the concatenated file. While the sending portion obviously requires network access, the data collection should be done without any network access. LANGUAGE/LIBRARIES/ETC: The program(s) may be written in any language, but there should be a minimum of configuration necessary when starting from a "normal" Linux distribution installation. Please no religious wars on the definition of a normal distribution :) GRAPHICAL: If possible the program should be graphical (instead of running in text mode or from within an xterm window). This can include the use of a web browser and forms, gtk, qt, Motif (it's free now), or other graphical toolkits. It is more important for the data entry part to be graphical than for the list generation/e-mail sending part... though it would be even better for both to be graphical. FUTURE: The program(s) should be written in a way that makes future expansion possible and easy. For instance, future versions may collect additional data, ie name, mailing address, etc. However, the data file will remain in plain text ... there is no need to attach SQL databases or any other fancy stuff. DOCUMENTATION: The program must be accompanied by a set of step-by-step instructions so a beginning user can install, configure and run your program(s). If possible this document should be distribution-neutral. The document should specify the name and location of the file containing e-mail addresses, and the file containing the message body to be sent. DEADLINE: The deadline for a complete, working contest entry is NOVEMBER 1, 2000. That is a Wednesday, one week before the ITEC show begins. GENTLEMEN (AND LADIES), START YOUR KEYBOARDS! Again, please post comments and questions to linux@flux.org instead of replying here. In addition to older tape formats, there are newer ones with increased capacity and reliability. One of these is the VXA tape from Ecrix (pronouned "Ae-Cree"). Their web site is http://www.ecrix.com Ecrix is based in Colorado, but is sending one of their senior people to this month's meeting to speak to FLUX! Here is a paragraph about our guest speaker ... Denis Iler is the vice president of Quality and Customer Support for Ecrix Corporation. He has spent 15 years in high technology of which more than 13 years were spent focused on service and technical support in the tape drive industry, including seven years focused on European and international service operations. Denis has authored several software tools that assist and aid in the troubleshooting and repair of tape products. Prior to joining Ecrix in 1998 as director of technical support, Denis spent more than 10 years with tape manufacturer Exabyte in various senior service and technical support management roles, including managing Exabyte's service organization and international tech support. If you know anyone who would like to attend ITEC (Wednesday 11/8 and Thursday 11/9, 10am - 4pm each day), send them e-mail. They can get in by pre-registering with a code number that corresponds to FLUX. The code number is: 801 To pre-register, go to this URL: http://itec.asmcorp.com/regatt/index.html From there, select the Fort Lauderdale show and check the "TICKET FROM EXHIBITOR" box. In the text field there, enter 801 for the code number, then continue with the process. When your guest comes to the show, have them bring a copy of your e-mail with the code number 801. They should be pre-registered and able to get into the show. NOTE: If you volunteered to work in our booth, DO NOT PRE-REGISTER FOR YOURSELF! You will soon receive instructions for exhibitor registration instead. So, the actual tickets are not necessary. However, if you want some, you can stop by the Metro Link office during regular business hours and pick them up. Send me e-mail (adam@metrolink.com) for directions and to set up a time. But in November that's the same day as the ITEC trade show. If people at ITEC learn about FLUX that day, they probably can't change their plans and attend a FLUX meeting the same night. On the other hand we don't want those folks to wait a whole month and forget about FLUX. So, the November FLUX meeting will be postponed one week, to Thursday November 16th (unfortunately the same night as the SIGGRAPH meeting that Bill mentioned). Since NIFTE is booked that evening, the meeting will be held at our home-away-from-home, Broward Community College's central campus. I think we are in the same room as last time, but will post detailed information about the room soon. The presentation for November is also geared for beginners, but may be of interest to everyone. The presenter will be Carl Couric, who you may recall did a great talk on Samba a few months ago. This time Carl will talk briefly about how to use RPM's, and then give a demonstration of Webmin. For those who haven't seen Webmin yet, it is very cool. We had a lot of interested folks come by the booth and hope to see many new faces at upcoming meetings and events. We will also start to see new names here on our e-mail lists. There has been lots of discussion in the past about how Linux questions should be answered. Some folks are for answering each one in detail. Others are for pointing the questioner to appropriate sources on the net or in book stores. Others prefer to make disparaging comments if the question was not fully researched before posting, or if the problem was not stated completely and accurately. It's important that we not scare our new friends away. For many of them this is a new and scary world they are venturing into. Our goal is to make it more comfortable and thereby help spread Linux across the world. It is fine to point someone to stuff on the net so they can read it, but please try to do so in a nice way. We are all busy folks, so while detailed answers are very much appreciated, it is also appropriate to say "here's a web site that should answer your questions ... post again if it doesn't." Don't assume that everyone is familiar with Linux. As the Linux movement grows we will see more and more people who have very little experience with it. Don't yell at someone for not posting the contents of their /etc/lilo.conf file for instance. Instead, if more info is needed to answer a question, just tell them what to paste into their next posting. This is a time to recall that all of us were beginners once. We now need to help the next group of beginners along. Try not to use abbreviations like IMHO, btw and others because they may not be known. Try to shield them from our fun religious wars like which-distro-is-best or which-text- editor-is-best. Just be the nice, helpful folks that you just naturally are :) --Adam :-) -- Adam Glass Metro Link, Inc. adam@metrolink.com http://www.metrolink.com --------------------------------------------------------- FLUX -- Florida Linux User Xchange -- http://www.flux.org -- - From adam@metrolink.com Tue Nov 14 08:17:31 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: flux-announce@flux.org Received: from server1.metrolink.com (server1.metrolink.com [216.242.72.34]) by mail.flux.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F14D011EC7 for ; Tue, 14 Nov 2000 08:17:30 -0500 (EST) Received: from metrolink.com (IDENT:adam@babcom.metrolink.com [216.242.92.68]) by server1.metrolink.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id IAA25724 for ; Tue, 14 Nov 2000 08:17:30 -0500 Message-ID: <3A113B6F.D08573BF@metrolink.com> Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 08:17:35 -0500 Organization: Metro Link, Inc. The meeting will be held at the Broward Community College central campus, instead of our usual meeting place. The meeting will take place in BUILDING 3, ROOM 100, which is a small auditorium in the art building. Here are directions to BCC, and to the meeting room ... - Take I-95 or I-75 to I-595 and exit at Davie Road as usual. - Exit southbound onto Davie Road (you can't go north). Go about one mile to BCC. On the way, you will PASS the following ... + Reese Road (first light, it's newly placed just before NIFTE) + NIFTE + Nova Drive (second light) + McFatter Vocational/Technical school (set back from the road) - Turn right at the third light. The sign at the light says BCC. - Follow the small road straight into the campus until it ends. - Turn left and follow the road to the first right turn. - Turn right ... there should be buildings to the right and parking to the left. Keep going until you come to an overhang, which is blocked to car traffic. Bear left and park near the overhang ... but NOT in a faculty/staff space. - Walk under the overhang and then go into the first building on the right. This is BUILDING 3. - Use the first entrance, a glass door that says "Art Gallery" on the window. - Go a short distance down the hall and make the first right turn. - Turn right again, immediately. You should be in the meeting room, which is a small auditorium. This is ROOM 100. There is a campus map available at this URL: http://www.broward.cc.fl.us/bcc/maps/central.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The meeting will start at 6:30pm with refreshments and time to chat, then the presentation will begin at 7:00pm. However, there is an alternative. You can stay on the list but receive its traffic in "digest form". That means you receive ONE e-mail message each day which contains all of the messages posted to the list that day. Here's how (EVEN IF YOU FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD): 1. Go to the main list page, http://www.flux.org/mailman/listinfo 2. Choose the list you want to receive in digest form (ie, click Linux). 3. At the bottom of the next page, type your e-mail address (the one currently subscribed to the list) and click EDIT OPTIONS 4. IF YOU FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD, the next page has an button called "Email My Password To Me". Do that and you'll have your password. 5. Below that part of the page you'll find a bunch of options to click. One of them is Set Digest Mode. Here's the explanation it gives: "If you turn digest mode on, you'll get posts bundled together once a day, instead singly when they're sent. If digest mode is changed from on to off, you will receive one last digest." ... Click the ON button for Set Digest Mode. 6. Below the options, type your password into the box and click the SUBMIT MY CHANGES button. YOU'RE DONE! Now, repeat the process for the other lists you want to receive in digest form. I'd suggest NOT receiving flux-announce as a digest because there are only a few posts there, and sometimes they are time-sensitive. I hope this will be a good solution for those who want the information on the lists but not the traffic in their mailbox! --Adam :-) -- Adam Glass Metro Link, Inc. adam@metrolink.com http://www.metrolink.com --------------------------------------------------------- FLUX -- Florida Linux User Xchange -- http://www.flux.org -- - From adam@metrolink.com Fri Dec 1 15:10:53 2000 Return-Path: Delivered-To: flux-announce@flux.org Received: from server1.metrolink.com (server1.metrolink.com [216.242.72.34]) by www.flux.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C518811EC7 for ; Fri, 1 Dec 2000 15:10:52 -0500 (EST) Received: from metrolink.com (IDENT:adam@babcom.metrolink.com [216.242.92.68]) by server1.metrolink.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id PAA13777 for ; Fri, 1 Dec 2000 15:10:52 -0500 Message-ID: <3A2805DF.7C6610AD@metrolink.com> Date: Fri, 01 Dec 2000 15:11:11 -0500 Organization: Metro Link, Inc. Originally we were going to have a guest speaker from out of town, but his travel plans were changed. So instead we have a more fun and less technical topic. It's cool but it's not really Linux-related. But what the hell :) We are going to show a DVD of the ACM SIGGRAPH 2000 Electronic Theater. For those who don't know, ACM is the Association for Computing Machinery, the largest and probably oldest such group in the world. SIGGRAPH is the computer graphics portion of ACM, which is huge in its own right. SIGGRAPH has a big convention every year, and the Electronic Theater is part of that. It consists of short pieces done by computer graphics artists. You may have seen one called "Geri's Game", which was later shown before a regular movie in theaters (last year). It was about an elderly gentleman playing chess, and was done by Pixar. They brought that character back in Toy Story 2 as the toy repairman. A few years ago the Electronic Theater included scenes from Jurassic Park well before the movie was released. The material being shown will not be the only cool thing, however. The DVD will be played by a Sony PS2! So, here's the traditional details: DATE: Thursday, December 14, Y2k TIME: 6:30pm Refreshments, program starts 7:00pm PLACE: NIFTE, our usual location. Hamboree is back! For those who haven't heard of it, Hamboree is a huge ham radio and computer event held every year at the Youth Fair grounds in Miami. The show takes place the first weekend of February, Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 4th, and we have been asked to participate for the third year in a row! This year two longtime FLUX members are coordinating Hamboree. Our thanks go to Stan Fields and Ronnie Glasscock for putting in the extra time and effort to make this event a success. Questions about Hamboree can be sent to Stan at stan@linuxmail.org WE NEED YOUR HELP! We have been given a booth in the show, and now we need to fill it with volunteers and computers. This is your chance to help spread the word about Linux. Please volunteer for a shift in the FLUX booth, and if possible also volunteer to have your computer in the booth. You do not need to be a Linux expert or a professional salesperson to be in the FLUX booth. Our goal is to have at least three volunteers in the booth at all times. If you don't know the answer to a question one of the others in the booth might ... and if not, tell them about our e-mail lists. Speaking of the lists, we have learned from the past and won't subscribe people to the Linux list this time :) We will probably sign those who request it onto the announce list only. By the way, if you volunteer for a shift in the booth, you get into the show for free. If you've never been ... it's pretty amazing. In addition to companies and organizations like FLUX who have booths, there are huge rooms full of "swap tables" where you can find some of the most amazing old and new hardware imaginable... and prices are very negotiable :) If you'd like to volunteer your computer, note that the event is very secure. The Florida Highway Patrol guards the entrances, and officers are locked inside at night so there is minimal risk of theft. We have never lost any equipment from a booth. Also, those volunteering their computers do _not_ have to be at Hamboree for setup and teardown. One of FLUX' purposes is to advocate Linux, to spread the word about it. Hamboree is a perfect opportunity for that. Please do your part as a member of FLUX and the worldwide Linux community. Send mail to Stan Fields at stan@linuxmail.org and volunteer to work a shift in the FLUX booth! FLUX meetings include social time both before and after the presentation, but there is also demand for events which are purely social. There are two elements of any social event which are challenges for FLUX: Alcohol and money. While alcohol is a part of almost any social event for adults, it is also a dangerous source of liability for an organization sponsoring and/or hosting the event. FLUX and the people who run it cannot afford to be sued for accidents which may occur during or after an event as a result of alcohol consumed during the event. FLUX is a free group. We do not charge dues or fees for membership or for any activity, because this would exclude part of the Linux community. But a social event costs a lot of money for food, beverages and of course for alcohol. It is possible that a company might sponsor these expenses, but then they would also be legally liable for any consequences. For these reasons FLUX cannot directly hold social events, even if we would like to do so. On the other hand the FLUX talk list may be used by anyone to post information about social events they are organizing, as long as the events are open to anyone who wants to attend. If you'd like to post about a social event, please be sure your post includes the following information: - Contact information for the event - State that the event is open to all (or all of drinking age, etc) - State that the event is not free - State that the event is not an official FLUX function Please be sure to post on the talk@flux.org list. Many people subscribe to the Linux list because they want technical information only. Obviously it would be nice if nobody had to worry about having their life ruined by a lawsuit, but unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world. So this is the best compromise. It lets anyone post about social events they would like to organize while protecting FLUX from liability.
